Vietnamese Sichuan Pepper
Zanthoxylum rhetsa
Vietnamese Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum rhetsa) is a small tree, its trunk and branches studded with short conical prickles on broad round bases and its odd-pinnate leaves gathered at the shoot tips in six to eight pairs of narrow leaflets. It grows scattered through dense and open mountain forest in Vietnam, from Vĩnh Phúc south to Đắk Lắk and into Ninh Thuận, Bình Thuận, Đồng Nai and Bình Phước. The harvested fruit is a small red capsule, ridged outside and papery white within, each holding one round, glossy black seed. The rind carries an essential oil, and the taste is at first of citrus, then sharply pungent.
